Esperanza Equine

The non-profit arm of Esperanza Gathering Place

Esperanza Equine exists to provide therapy services to clients who might not otherwise have the funds for it.  Partnering with horses, agricultural projects and the natural world makes Esperanza Equine a very special place.

Why Horses?

Well, we love the beauty of their strides, the glow of their spirit, the kindness (most of the time) eyes.

But there is so much more.

National Institutes of Health studies show measurable improvements from equine assisted therapy, such as a 66.7 percent likelihood of lower PTSD scores after three weeks of participation, rising to 87.5 percent after six weeks.  There is often a decrease in insomnia, flashbacks, and panic attacks.  In one study of first responders, over 50 percent of participants no longer met the DSM 5 criteria for PTSD after an eight week program.  Having horses engage in the traditional therapy process brings profound insight into the actual needs, ‘stuck places’ and concerns of people.

Organization Description and History

“The place of your calling is where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet” – Fredrick Buechner.

Esperanza Equine was born on the property in the Greenhorn Valley of Southern Colorado which bears its name.  It was established in 2023 when Steve and Jan Proett moved to “The Other Colorado” to continue the last chapters of their careers with a view to nurture their own hearts after strenuous careers; also to honor their calling to hospitality, support and healing for people ‘on the edge.”

Both Steve and Jan have three loves:  providing nurture and encouragement to those who need guidance and assistance, animals, and cultivating the natural world.

“I am still learning.” - Plato

Jan has been a licensed professional counselor for over 30 years and has long desired to shift her practice to one of serving underserved populations, engaging horses and animals to facilitate healing, and providing opportunities for “hands in the dirt” healing.  Ample research into the effectiveness of these modalities has further inspired her desire.
